Simplistic Way to Think About Power BI Default Interactions

Who's fault? Default!

If Power BI were a movie, visuals would undoubtedly be the stars. But let's stick to KISS - keep it simple smartypants.

Suppose I was dared to write a post with a terrible analogy and just ride that ship all the way down.

I chose 'movie making' as the analogy to write about Power BI default interactions. Ok let's continue.

Enter the 'Edit Interactions' feature.

This unsung hero ensures your visuals not only look good but also interact seamlessly, telling a cohesive data story.

Ready for a behind-the-scenes tour? Let's change those Power BI default interactions.

Setting the Stage:

With Power BI Desktop fired up and your report in view, you've got your canvas.

Now, pick a visual—any chart, graph, or table you've added.

This will be our primary actor.

Spotlight on 'Edit Interactions:

Selecting a visual prompts the appearance of the "Format" tools in the top ribbon.

Among them, you'll find the 'Edit Interactions' icon, symbolized by a magic wand.

Click on it, and the magic begins!

Directing the Visual Interactions:

Once 'Edit Interactions' is active, every other visual on the page will showcase a set of interaction icons.

Think of these as 'directorial cues' for your visuals:

  • Filter: Makes other visuals adjust based on the selection in your primary visual.
  • Highlight: Emphasizes specific data points in other visuals, but without filtering out the rest.
  • None: Keeps other visuals unchanged, regardless of the selection in your main visual.

Crafting the Narrative:

Clicking on these icons lets you dictate how each visual reacts to the primary one.

For instance, selecting a bar in a bar chart might dim other visuals (if you choose 'Highlight') or even adjust their data (if you opt for 'Filter').

Playback & Fine-Tuning:

Once you've set up the interactions, it's time for a test run.

Interact with your primary visual and see how the others respond.

Not happy with the drama unfolding?

Return to 'Edit Interactions' and adjust the cues until you nail that perfect story flow.

Final Curtain Call:

'Edit Interactions' in Power BI is like the director's touch to a blockbuster.

While individual visuals are powerful, it's the interplay between them that crafts a compelling narrative.

So, take charge, play with interactions, and let your data visuals weave a tale that captivates and informs.

Lights, camera, action!

I just vomited. That was terrible. But, dare settled!
